Orthotics

orthoticsYour feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Structural problems in your feet can alter your walking pattern, running pattern & cause pain throughout your body including the feet themselves, ankle, shin, knees, hips and lower back. A clear and accurate assessment of the mechanics of your lower limbs is fundamental to understanding the profound effect that subtle faults in your foot can cause.

Combining our exacting biomechanics assessment and a detailed computerised gait analysis we can provide a complete diagnostic of foot & lower limb function; allowing for specific treatment or orthotics to be prescribed accurately.

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are temporary or customised orthopaedic insoles that fit comfortably inside your shoes which help restore normal balance and pressure on your muscles and joints, letting you get on pain free with your sport or daily life. Dependant on your need, we can prescribe numerous shell strengths and flex so that they are perfectly suited to your requirements be it, field sports, runners, golf, men’s work or even women’s fashion…. to name just a few of the types available…..

How does it all work?

We book you in for an assessment and Gait Scan with one of our Biomechanical Chartered Physiotherapists or one of our Podiatrists during which we determine whether Orthotics would be of help. If so, we generally recommend that we first provide you with temporary orthotics. This will only last one to two months but will allow the Physio to make exact corrections and determine with you that this works for you. The Physio will also prescribe stretches and/or strengthening during this period to ensure that if Custom-made insoles are needed, that the body has adjusted well to accept the orthotic and that only the minimum amount of correction is needed. In other words we correct as much as we can prior to using an orthotic as in some cases this is enough!

Should the temporary orthotics work as we expect, we would then move you towards Custom-made orthotics which are made either by foam box or by taking a dynamic scan of your gait, depending on your condition, sport or requirement. The orthotics are ready for collection within 2 weeks of scanning.

Should you and the Physio agree, you can skip the temporary orthotics stage if both of you feel that this is the best course of action.
